A warm body shifted next to me, the light scent of lavender tickling my nose. A small grin graced my lips as I pulled her closer, my mind still teetering on the edges of sleep and being awake. This had all been a horrible dream. My girl was still with me, and everything was fine.
But the moment I opened my eyes and saw a head full of dark hair instead of red hair, I quickly realized I was still living in the nightmare Iâd been in for the last few months. Savannah was still dead, Alec was still alive, and it was his daughter laying in bed next to me, not my girlfriend.
I shot up in bed, my heart racing as I thought back to the events of last night. It was strange how I harped about not being anyoneâs drunken mistake, only to have regrets myself. Now that lust no longer clouded my mind, everything about my current situation felt wrong. It shouldâve been Savannah curled up against me, not Kat.
I shouldnât have crossed the line with her last night, regardless of her begging. I couldnât afford to become emotionally involved with this woman when I had no plans to keep her around, even if our chemistry was perfect.
Kat rolled onto her back, the sheet falling away from her body to reveal her bare, perky breasts. âWhat time is it?â she murmured sleepily as she stretched.
âItâs still early. Youâre fine to sleep some more,â I answered.
âPerfect,â she said before rolling away from me and drifting back off.
I ground my teeth and forced myself to get out of bed. I needed to put space between us so I could think clearly. A storm of different emotions crashed within me as I made my way to the bathroom. My girlfriend had only been dead for almost four months and here I was fucking around with the daughter of the man responsible for her death.
First, I failed to protect her and now itâs like Iâm already trying to replace her, I mentally scolded myself as I slapped the light switch. I knew I was probably being irrational, but it was hard to allow myself to relax as Alec continued to live another day he didnât deserve to see.
âItâs just a one-time thing. Nothing anybody needs to know about,â I murmured to myself as I walked over to the sink. My eyes widened when I caught my reflection in the mirror.
âYouâve gotta be fucking shitting me,â I mumbled under my breath. Angry, red scratches and welts covered the top of my head, evidence of my night with Kat last night. There was no fucking way I could explain this away, even if Iâd said something as stupid as nicking myself shaving.
I glanced past my own reflection to see Katâs naked form still lying in bed and sighed deeply. I couldnât lie and say last night wasnât something both of us needed. Sheâd needed me just as much as I needed the touch of
